About
I was born in Czechoslovakia and came to the UK in 1967 as a post-doctoral visitor to the Psychological Laboratory, University of Cambridge; then I was a research fellow at the Industrial Research Training Unit of the University of London. In 1970 I moved to the University of Stirling. I have been a visiting professor at various universities in the UK and abroad. Currently I am a visiting professor at the Institute of Social Psychology, London School of Economics and an international fellow of the Open Society Institute at the University of Moldova.
Research
Although my main field of research is social psychology, I am interested in relating social psychology to other human and social sciences and to philosophy.
My theoretical research is concerned with the development of dialogical epistemology and dialogical concepts in social psychology, particularly in social representations, language and communication. These concerns have very much influenced my empirical research in haemophilia, different kinds of communicative disabilities and in studies of socio-political changes in post-communist Europe.
My current research project, supported by the Emeritus Fellowship of the Leverhulme Trust, is concerned with the study of trust and distrust in social representations based on a dialogical approach; I am exploring language, interactions and contents of messages in focus groups of young people, which were collected in the Czech Republic, Scotland and France. I am also leading a small international study group to explore the dynamics of trust/distrust in communication. This project is supported jointly by the British Academy and the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris.
